John Beddoe, M.D., F.R.S. (painting)
a framed oil painting, showing: John Beddoe (1826-1911), physician and anthropologist; from 1857, Beddoe began working as a physician in Clifton, Bristol (where he practised for thirty-five years) and was also at the Bristol Royal Infirmary from 1862 until his death; in this work, which shows Beddoe aged 79, he is seen holding a measuring device which relates to his interest in ethnology; it is said he travelled in Europe where he measured bodies "ready to hand in streets and market places"
