Dormeuse Chariot & Eilwagen (horse drawn vehicle)

Horse-drawn travelling carriage, also known as a Dormeuse chariot or Eilwagen, made in 1827 for the 7th Duke of Beaufort. Used by him until the arrival of railways for trips to London from Badminton Estate, and later exhibited by him as a curiosity at the South Kensington Exhibition in 1873 and again at the Crystal Palace in 1896. Last shown in public with horses in 1920. Donated to the Fuller historic vehicle collection at an unknown date and by them to the Museum, also at an unknown date. Displayed at Bristol City Museum, where it was damaged by bombing in 1940, and removed to storage at Kings Weston House shortly afterwards.
